The defining question is who can sign. In a custodial arrangement, the operator can authorize or block movements under its systems and terms; an internal account balance is a claim on that operator until an on-chain withdrawal completes.

Potential benefits

  • Password or device recovery through a supported account process.
  • Customer support, transaction history, statements, and tax or accounting exports.
  • Policy controls such as role approvals, withdrawal allowlists, limits, and delayed transfers.
  • Integrated trading, conversion, fiat access, or institutional workflows.
  • Centralized monitoring and incident response for supported accounts.

Counterparty and solvency risk

Customers rely on the provider to hold sufficient assets, segregate them appropriately, operate honestly, survive legal and market shocks, and honor withdrawals. Proof-of-reserves can support a review but does not by itself establish liabilities, asset ownership, control quality, or solvency.

Security and access risk

Custodians are targets for phishing, account takeover, insider abuse, software defects, key compromise, and operational mistakes. They may freeze, delay, limit, or reverse internal account actions under their terms, risk controls, outages, or legal process.

A provider may collect identity, device, transaction, and source-of-funds data and may disclose or restrict it as required by law or policy. Requirements, protections, insurance, and recourse vary by entity, product, asset, and jurisdiction.

Solana-specific operational questions

Confirm the exact token mint and supported network before depositing. Ask whether the service supports Token-2022 features, staking, NFTs, memo requirements, priority fees, and withdrawals during maintenance or congestion. An unsupported deposit or extension can lead to delay or loss.

Custody is not the same as a familiar wallet interface

Phantom, Solflare, and Backpack are ordinarily self-custody wallets, and Squads is smart-account and multisignature infrastructure. Their convenience does not mean they hold customer keys like a centralized custodian. Always verify the actual authority and recovery model.

Safer use checklist

  • Verify the operator, legal entity, jurisdiction, terms, and supported assets.
  • Use a unique password and phishing-resistant multifactor authentication when available.
  • Enable withdrawal allowlists, alerts, and the strongest supported recovery controls.
  • Review custody, segregation, audits, incidents, insurance scope, and withdrawal history.
  • Test a small deposit and withdrawal using the exact asset and network.
  • Keep only the amount needed for the custodial purpose and maintain independent records and contingency plans.
