A wallet manages signing authority and provides an interface to on-chain accounts. Tokens remain recorded on the blockchain; the wallet or hardware device does not literally store the assets inside it.
Choose the custody and recovery model deliberately
Traditional self-custody places recovery responsibility on the user. Custodial, passkey, MPC, social-recovery, hardware, and multisignature wallets distribute control and recovery differently. Understand who can sign, recover, freeze, or upgrade the wallet.
Protect recovery material
Never share a private key or recovery phrase. Enter a traditional phrase only in the verified setup or recovery flow when you intentionally restore the wallet. A support representative, airdrop, token migration, or application website should not request it.
Review transactions, not just websites
A valid signature proves that a key authorized a transaction; it does not prove that the program is safe or that the result matches the user's intent. Review program addresses, asset changes, permissions, destinations, fees, and wallet simulation warnings before signing.
Reduce the impact of one compromise
- Use a low-value wallet for unfamiliar applications.
- Keep long-term assets under separate, deliberately secured authority.
- Install wallet software only from verified official sources.
- Keep operating systems, browsers, firmware, and wallet software current.
- Use unique account passwords and phishing-resistant multifactor authentication for custodial services.
- Do not reuse the same recovery phrase across compartments you expect to be independent.
Prepare for incidents
Know how to verify a clean destination wallet, move assets, revoke application permissions where the protocol supports it, contact a custodian, preserve transaction evidence, and report impersonation. Practice with small amounts before an emergency.
